Cosmetic Lengthening Surgery Enhancing Height for Aesthetic Purposes

Cosmetic lengthening surgery is a surgical procedure that individuals undergo to increase their height for aesthetic purposes. This type of surgery aims to enhance a person’s natural height and is typically performed to boost self-confidence, improve body image, and address aesthetic concerns.

Cosmetic Lengthening Surgery Process

1. Preoperative Assessment:
Consultation: The patient meets with an orthopedic surgeon to receive information about the risks, benefits, and overall process of the surgery.
Medical Examination: A comprehensive medical evaluation is performed to assess the patient’s health status and suitability for the surgery.
1. Surgical Intervention:
Osteotomy: The surgeon makes a precise cut in the bone at a specific point to prepare it for lengthening.
Device Placement: A device (such as an external fixator or internal lengthening device) is inserted into the bone. This device gradually helps lengthen the bone over time.
2. Distraction (Lengthening) Phase:
Slow Lengthening: The bone is gradually lengthened at a rate of about 1 mm per day. This process typically lasts several months, depending on the desired height increase.
Check-ups: Regular visits to the doctor are required to monitor progress, ensure proper adjustment of the device, and check for any complications.
1. Consolidation (Bone Hardening) Phase:
New Bone Formation: After the bone has been lengthened, time is given for the newly formed bone to harden and consolidate. This phase can take several months.
Bone Healing: The body heals and strengthens the new bone, ensuring it becomes stable and functional.
1. Rehabilitation:
Physiotherapy: Postoperative physical therapy is crucial for strengthening muscles and maintaining joint mobility. It also helps prevent stiffness and aids in overall recovery.
Techniques Used
1. LON (Lengthening Over Nail) Technique:
This method involves the use of an external fixator combined with an intramedullary device to lengthen the extremity.
2. External Fixators and Internal Devices:
Various external fixators (like the Ilizarov method) or internal lengthening devices are used, which help gradually extend the bone. These devices are adjusted regularly to ensure the best results.

Risks and Complications

Cosmetic lengthening surgery, while highly effective, carries certain risks:
Infection: There is a risk of infection at the surgical site or where the device is inserted.
Pain: Patients may experience pain during and after the lengthening process.
Nerve and Muscle Damage: There is a possibility of nerve or muscle damage during or after the surgery.
Bone Healing Problems: Issues like delayed bone healing or non-union (failure of the bone to heal properly) can occur, though they are rare.
